Seth Sentry – The Waitress Song

August 1, 2011

Amidst the “one-upping” so prevalent in the hip-hop scene, it’s refreshing to have artists such as Childish GambinoHoodie Allen and Chiddy Bang who are willing to play it down a bit. The likes of such dynamic artists certainly have it over the Australian scene though which still has some ground to make up. So it’s a good sign tracks like this come along.

Seth Sentry is an unsigned Melbourne emcee and a fellow rapper of 360 and Pez, two of the bigger names in Australian hip-hop, and is on the up, with “The Waitress Song” featuring heavily in Triple J Unearthed in 2009, and it’s still getting some heavy rotation on my iTunes. The relaxed storytelling style is easy to listen to…I love it, and if you’re a fan, check out “Train Catcher” off his EP titled “The Waiter Minute EP”.

Go check out his EP on iTunes.

360 feat. Pez – Just Got Started

August 1, 2011

This track by Melbourne emcees 360 and Pez is perfect for any summer afternoon. When Lupe Fiasco played in Sydney in 2009 Pez was along for the ride as a local support artist, and along with fellow Aussies Muph and Plutonic, got the crowd pumping for the superstar that is Lupe. “The Festival Song“, a hit collaboration between these two, featured on Pez‘s “A Mind Of My Own” in 2008, and now this time around the artists have swapped it around to have Pez featuring.

Just Got Started” heavily samples The Whitest Boy Alive‘s “1517” to great effect, and comparisons with “The Festival Song” are sure to be made. But, there’s nothing wrong with that; the laid back melody and rhymes they drop is their style, and it’s a refreshing break from the brash and arrogant personalities of the dominant hip-hop artists.

Summer days…almost

September 22, 2010

The weather’s starting to heat up in Sydney town and this track by Melbourne MC Pez just seems right for the time. When I heard Pez support Lupe Fiasco at the Enmore in 2009, the crowd went off when this popular track was played, and was the perfect local choice (along with Muph and Plutonic) for the superstar that is Lupe. It works so well because everyone can relate to the simplicity of relaxing and listening to music with your friends, enjoying the moment.

“We all know you’ve got your friends to make your energy last”

It’s been out for a while now, but always keeps a good mood going when it comes on. Have you noticed that something you are worrying about at the moment seems to not matter once it has passed? For me, this track helps me realise that and stop stressing out…you can’t help but relax and enjoy. It’s all about enjoying the moment with those around you. Hopefully it gets you over hump day.
